-The POWER of God’s Word!

Posted by Scott on September 27, 2007

As men we often may wonder how to combat the sinful, fleshy everyday life we may live in and how to teach our kids to combat the flesh as well.  If we look at the world for the answers it would seem there is no weapon we have to fight off bombardment of scenes, excuses, attacks, and lies we are faced with daily.  It is amazing to me how absolutely weak the church in our day has become.  The dumbing down of God’s word is one of the many culprits.  People are fascinated with prosperity gospels that are heresies for the most part.  People want more of life….privileged lives!

“Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, that no one fall by the same sort of disobedience. For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”   (Hebrews 4:11-12 RSV)

The word of God has Penetrating Power….it can penetrate the heart of the most vile of sinners.  It penetrated my heart years ago and is still penetrating it today.  It has the power to bring about forgiveness for those that read God’s word, repent of sins and believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.  God’s word has the power to penetrate the most burdened heart of those of who are believers.  It can provide comfort and guidance in such times.  Our first response should be to cry out to God and spend time in His word.  The word of God tells us that His word is “living and active“.  If His word is living and active then no matter what time in history we are living, His word is still just as powerful and true as the day it was breathed into mans heart and mind and printed on paper.  His word requires action on our part….we can either reject it or obey it, but we will take action one way or another. We find that although the new life of Jesus Christ is in us we are still caught up living partially in the old life.  We catch ourselves reacting towards people with bitterness, impatience, anger, frustration, anxiety, worry, fear, and uncertainty.  What can assist us in our transformation into the new life that Jesus has given us?  The word of God!  The Holy Spirit uses the word to strip away falseness of our lives.  It penetrates deep into our hearts to areas we had no clue was infected by the old virus of sin we had prior to knowing Christ.  Something I have discovered in long-time believers and even in my own life is that the power of the flesh can be entrenched deep within us…..it doesn’t raise its ugly head all the time, but at crucial times it can surface.

God’s word is here to strip away the pretenses in our life.  Not only does God’s word strip away the scales of sin that has flaked up in our lives, but it will unveil that which is true.  Whenever faced with a question in our life as to what is true or not….go to the Word.  It will reveal what is true and as it is always said, “the truth shall set you free.”    It is no longer necessary to go forward in this life “doggedly, wearily, fighting a battle that is already lost”.  It is God’s will that we step out each day with His glory in our lives unto victory..the victory that is already won.

Jesus Overcame temptations by the Power of God’s word….And Jesus answered….Get thee behind me satan; for it is written….”  (Luke 4:8Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness, tired and hungry, but still was able to fight off our adversaries darts of sin.  We need to force ourselves to spend time in God’s word in order to be able to fight off these temptations that are thrown at us daily.  It amazes me at the number of pastors and ministers that think they can stay on top of their ministries without meditating, studying and chewing on God’s word…..daily!  The falls that we have experienced around the country is due to this misguided effort to do God’s work out of the flesh rather than from a holiness that can only be developed through God’s word with the Holy Spirit’s directions.   Men, don’t think for a minute that we are immune to the same temptations that take down famous leaders.  We are equally in danger….be in the word daily!

God’s word has Wonder-working Power…..remember when Peter was out fishing and could not catch anything and as they were coming in Jesus told to throw their nets on the other side of the boat?   Peter could not believe his ears, but rather than argue at Jesus words, he throw the net over the other side and filled two boats with fish.  That is power…wonder-working power.  Another example would be Jesus calming the sea when the disciples were afraid.  The storm immediately calmed….even the weather listens to God’s word and obeys.

God’s word has Everlasting PowerHeaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”  (Matthew 24:35)  That is a promise and very strong words.  Today we have few things that are eternal….our souls and God’s word.   Other than that, everything else is simply temporal.  Listen guys, our fine cars, elaborate houses, expensive clothes, watches, diamonds, and money will all be consumed someday by fire…what do we have right now that can survive that kind of heat?  Are we planting the word of God in our children’s hearts and minds?  Survival in the future like now will require that we plant this everlasting power into our kids minds and hearts.  Do not think for a minute the godless public institutions like public schools and colleges are going to do that.  As a matter of fact, these godless, vile institutions are going to put things in your kids minds that will go against the word of God.  Look at the drug problems within our schools now.  How about the sexual problems….kids as young as 12 having sexual intercourse at school in plain view of the students.   Oh, I understand, that is somewhere else, but not the school your kid goes to…uh huh.  Well, God’s word planted in your childs mind and heart is all that will help them in time of temptation to follow what they are being taught 40 hours plus per week.   God’s everlasting power is in His word.

God’s word has Revealing Power…through His word we are directed down a path He has designed for us to travel.  “The word of God…is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”  (Hebrews 4:12)  It reveals God’s heart to us.  It shows us His mercies and kindness.  His word offers the promise of salvation for those who repent and call out to Christ to save them and believe in Him.  The Holy Spirit cleanses, empowers and directs us in our commitment to Christ.  John 16:13 tells us that “…He will guide you into all truth…”  What a way to live…in His truth.  The world is so full of lies that even believers have a hard time recognizing the truth anymore.  Our business practices and dealings suffer, because we think something is right and when placed on top of the word of God it does not stand.

I want to encourage each of us men/dads/husbands to dig into God’s word deeper.  Allow the Holy Spirit to draw you closer to the word, and to the truth found in it…a much richer relationship with God will be found there.  Do not give in to the worlds way of doing things or get caught up in what the world calls “truth”…..match it up to the word!
