-Music’s Place in Our Lives!

The purpose for music is to worship, praise and glorify the Lord Jesus Christ!  It is that simple.  Music was not meant to evangelize or lift man up.  Most of the Christian music today does not glorify God in anyway….it is there to sell and appeal to the masses for a profit.  The Lord may allow the commercialization of music, but He is not glorified!   Any kind of melody of music that you can find at a rock concert or bar room has no place in the church….it is that simple and matter of fact!

I have been researching some time now about the proper kind of music that should be in the church and my families life.  I thoroughly enjoy most of the hymns that we sing at our church along with a variety of some of the contemporary songs.  It does not require holding our hands up in the air, bouncing around the place like bangies, or any of that sort.  It does bring my heart into a reverent place with a holy God so that I can worship God at that moment and not impair someone else’s worshipful experience.

I recommend each dad, husband and man to thoroughly examine their places of worship and the music they find there.  Does it stand up to biblical test.  This is not to be legalistic at all.  It seems that the Contemporary Christian Music movement is very guarded when presented with God’s word against something they are doing or singing.  As an authentic Christian we should always welcome God’s word in our lives in every case unless we are living a worldly existence with a Christian mask over it.  we should never be ashamed of God’s word and that it might reprove us.  I have had to rethink many things in my Christian life once presented with the truth in the bible.  Reproof is a good thing if it is bringing us closer to God and growing that intimate relationship with Him.

Here are some biblical guidelines I found to help us keep on track:

BIBLE GUIDELINES FOR CHRISTIAN MUSIC
CHRISTIAN MUSIC SHOULD PRAISE THE LORD JESUS CHRIST – NOT MAN

The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my SONG will I PRAISE him. Psalm 28:7

CHRISTIAN MUSIC IS FOR THE LORD – NOT FOR THE WORLD

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts TO THE LORD. Colossians 3:16

CHRISTIAN MUSIC IS A NEW SONG – NOT AN OLD SONG

I will sing a NEW SONG unto thee, O God: upon a psaltery and an instrument of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee. Psalm 144:9

CHRISTIAN MUSIC’S MESSAGE SHOULD BE CLEAR – NOT VAGUE OR DECEPTIVE

I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the UNDERSTANDING also. 1 Cor. 14:15

CHRISTIAN MUSIC SHOULD EMPHASIS THE MESSAGE – NOT THE MUSIC – NOR THE MUSICIAN

Sing forth the honour of his name: make his praise glorious. Psalm 66:2

CHRISTIAN MUSIC IS IN THE LOCAL CHURCH – NOT CONCERT HALLS, NIGHT CLUBS.

Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the CHURCH will I sing praise unto thee. Hebrew 2:12

CHRISTIAN MUSIC SHOULD FEED THE SPIRIT – NOT THE FLESH

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and SPIRITUALsongs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. Colossians 3:16

CHRISTIAN MUSICIANS SHOULD BE DEDICATED TO THE LORD – NOT WORLDLY

18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Ephesians 5:18-21

One thing has become very obvious to me as I have watched contemporary church after contemporary church and their congregations…..most of the people have a selfish/worldly bent about them.  They do not welcome God’s word to be presented to them if it is going to show them to be in error.  Their point of view is that “God accepts us just like we are”.  However, the translation becomes, “we can remain with God just as we are…sin and all”.  I am not a legalist and abhor legalism to the core.  I will fight legalism to my dying breath, however, with God there is order and that order is in His church as well as in life and His word speaks of that order and of His purposes.  Strip off any arrogance and high minded ways and let’s get down to reality when it comes to worshipping our Lord Jesus Christ.  Take time to measure all things to God’s word no matter what we are told….it will make all the difference in your life.
