Purpose-Driven Church has “Friends in Low Places”

Posted by Scott on February 22, 2008

– A Museum of Idolatry –
This Is What Happens When the Church Fails to Remain Faithful to the Correct Preaching and Teaching of God’s Word

This Purpose-Driven Church Has “Friends in Low Places”

Imagine showing up at church to find that your pastor has decided to stage his very own American Idol contest.

A church member decked in country and western garb walks on stage and begins singing “I’ve got friends in low places”.

In a western twang he belts out such inspired lyrics as:

I’ve got friends in low places
where the whiskey drowns
and the beer chases my blues away

As soon as this ‘church’ song is finished the music minister stands up and calls people to worship the Lord.

Does this sound too insane to be true?

It’s not! Here is the video to prove it!

This is from Newspring Church in Anderson, South Carolina.

Perry Noble is their pastor and he is a disciple of Rick Warren. Click here to read his open letter to Rick Warren.

After watching this video please scroll down and read the update. This story gets better.

*** Update ***

This story gets weirder by the minute.

We received a tip from a reader that “Pastor” Tony Morgan of NewSpring Church commented on the “American Idol” sermon series at his blog. Here is what he said:

“The vote for next weekend’s opening song included Brick House by the Commodores. I’m just praying that God loves funk.”

Here is the link.

Yep, “Pastor” Tony was personally pulling for the funk song ‘Brick House’. This is a song that is about the female anatomy. And yes, this song was sung in their church as part of their American Idol contest. Here are some of the lyrical highlights of ‘Brick House’:

1. She knows she got everything
a woman needs to get a man, yeah.
How can she use, the things she use
36-24-36, what a winning hand!

2. The clothes she wears, the sexy ways,
make an old man wish for younger days
She knows she’s built and knows how to please
Sure enough to knock a man to his knees
We’re sure these lyrics fit perfectly with the other sermon series they did called “Girls Gone Wild“. How kewl is it that they named an entire sermon series after a series of porn videos.

Golly those Purpose-Driven Churches sure are relevant.

God can’t be glorified by pop culture? do you only have “Christian” music on your ipod? we are in the presence of God 24/7/365, why do we think that being in HIS presence on Sunday morning from 9-noon is different than at 345pm on a tuesday?

let’s not judge this church or it’s people and let’s not slam Rick Warren just because someone who likes him is a little strange…

    i’m just sayin…

You need to get deep into the word of God. I want the false teachings exposed…false churches exposed and so no…thousands of people are falling for this mess and will end up more screwed up than when they started. I did not write this post here, but I included them on my blog for further exposure. If this is what you like, great….but in time you will be left flat, depressed, and wondering what happened. Do not fall for everything you hear a “preacher say or teach”…you have to know the word of God in order to understand that not all of this which seems right is right. I have listened to countless hours of preaching from many different pastors and evangelist for the past 40 years and many of them come very close to the telling you the gospel truth, but many change just enough of the word to make what they are saying seem right(truth), but in reality it is not. Get in the word of God and dig deep.

By the way….this is not judging….what is being exposed is the false teachings being drawn out by the truth of God’s word. Judging is not liking what someone is wearing or drives ( I could care less what they wear or drive)…telling the truth is putting the false teachings in the light of God’s word which is truth.

“Don’t let anyone lead you astray with empty philosophy and high-sounding non-sense that come from human thinking and from the evil powers of this world, and not from Christ.” Colossians 2:8 NLT

    Read Romans 12:2, James 4:4, 2 Timothy 4:2, and Acts 2:47

    Dig deeper brother….dig deeper!

Granger CC focused on the Beatles music this Christmas…is that too far for you too? I’m sure that Perry would not condone the message of the lyrics “Brick House,” but just as Pharaoh Neco (a pagan king) brought a message to Josiah from God (in Jeremiah), so we can bring the message of God through something that was not originally meant for something Godly.

It always amazes me at how defensive some people can be. I am not sure exactly what you are talking about in the comments, but you know you can attend whatever church you wish, worship ever how you wish, sin ever how you wish…you answer to God for your actions not me…our main concern is the number of people that come to EC churches (not all EC churches) and think they have been saved when in reality they are coming to the entertainment not to Christ. HOw do I know this, I mentor dozens of these former EC..Seekers. They have been hugely mislead down the primrose path that all they need to do is say a prayer and “boom” they are saved….it is not exactly that simple. These guys are so screwed up it will take years by God’s grace to transform them back to usefulness. The depression, the messed up theology or lack of theology, the miconception of Christ and biblical teaching, etc….this all came out of a movement that thinks it is of God, but it is really nothing more than a worldly lie. I am not condeming 100% of these churches, because I do know there are differeing degrees within the EC movement itself, but the most note worthy ones I have experienced are entertaining and loving people into the pits of hell. It is a dangerous place to go if you mislead anyone with false worship and false teachings…stick to God’s truth always and you will not be mislead. You have to dig in deep into God’s word….ask for His wisdom and receive His knowledge already lay-ed out within the pages of God’s word.

This article you are jumping on here is not mine although I can concur with it. I have been down this road before…it is not of God for the most part, it is of the world disguising itself like being from God…man will think he is going in a right direction when someday he will find out that his ways are not God’s ways or his thoughts are not God’s thoughts.

My main purpose is to expose this movement for what it is and allow dialogue to move forward as well. Listen, I have great friends that are caught up in this and believe me they are no further along in their walk with Christ today then 5 years ago and they attend church every week and set under the same “milk maid” sermons every week. People need depth and meat from the word every week not surface stuff or milk.

Beatles music? Come on you can do better than that. If Perry did not condone the lyics of “Brick House” then why was it performed on his watch? I believe it stated this was one of his favorite types of music “funk”. I highly doubt God was amused by the song or the lyrics in a service supposedly to worship Him…doubt the Holy Spirit hung around for it.

Hey, don’t attack me on this….go to God’s word and make the case. Go to Him and make your case, not me. I am not the one you are accountable to. I merely have the freedom to share what the Lord has shown me within the pages of the bible and the conviction of what of right and wrong and I have the freedom to post the opinions of others that I tend to agree with on this blog. I am personally striving for sanctification (to be set apart for God), holiness, and godliness…this is all for God’s glory. This means I do not want to be found in appearence of living in sin or causing others to sin, singing that which may not glorify my Lord, talk or act in anyway that is contrary to God’s word, study on God’s word, meditate on His word daily, and pray fervently. This is not perfection my friend, but it is a daily goal. I fail like anyone else, but I do not now nor will ever tak e SIN lightly. I do not make a joke of the sinful life or the ways of sinful people. I cannot water down His word just so it will not offend someone I might be addressing…the truth will stand on its own.

I’m being defensive? I was merely saying that throughout the Bible God used people and things that were not inherently Godly for his glory and his purpose. You cannot argue that. Also…you can think whatever you want, I have no problem with that, but don’t excuse me of sinning. That is ridiculous. You might as well be Falwell saying that the USA got what it deserved at 9/11. You are not God, you cannot judge.

    That accuse, not excuse.

I am just curious, Tyler, what do you think the purpose of music in a worship service is? If it is to reveal God in the hearts of others or to draw us away from ourselves and into his presence, how can that be done through the music of the “Beatles” or “Brick House”. I think we have 2 different ideas of what worship should be or accomplish. I am curious as to what your defintion would be?

By the way, I do not have an IPOD…my kids do, but I don’t. What I do have available music wise is mostly Christian music…mostly the great hymns. It has taken years for me to get to a point where I really understand the purpose for music and how it is glorify God 24/7/365 and to appreciate these old hymns that are rich in theology and doctrine. This is not to say if you have other music on your IPOD you are living in sin…I am not saying that at all. We are all in different places in our lives.

    For Tyler,

I just read your comments and not sure what you are referring to. I never accused you of sinning nor am I judging you…read all my post that I have written and that will be very clear that I do not judge for I am not the judge. As far as the Falwell comment…I have not always agreed with him making these types of statements although I know exactly what he is talking about, but it will never come across like that….same goes for the 700 Club guy…they do not speak for me.

Jesus said, “For many are called, but few are chosen.” Matthew 22:14 He also told us that, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.” John 10:27-28

It is so refreshing to see somebody stand up against false doctrine, and all these wolves in sheeps clothing, including almost all these so called preachers on TBN.All my life I had been involved in New Age and the Occult and I had lived that life for 25 years or so before i became undeceived and born again. It is amazing how much deception is in this world as the Enemy continues to deceive the many who fall prey to his tactics. That is why my wife and I have disconnected from our Babtist church of two years,as the pastor has introduced Warrens teaching in our Church.Confronting him with this and how Warren uses very subtle new Age and Occult techniques in his so called “teachings and spiritual disciplines” I was agressivly reproached and told that I did not know about New Age as much as the Pastor. This is probably because he was taught about various different teaching other than the Church and of course is more learned than I. The Pastor read it but I have LIVED it! Not to rag on the pastor too much but its strange how these pastors let these teachings very slowly and surely creep into the church and indoctrinate these teachings into the church body.Pity the New Born again Christian that is then taught these false doctrines it is easy for them to be deceived as I was before I was born Again!
