Could Joseph Smith have been a great story teller..or a true prophet?

Posted by Scott on March 26, 2008

Interesting video.  Sandra Tanner in this video is the great great grand daughter of Brigham Young.   Can you tell me your thoughts on the contents of this video?  I am not stating a support of it, just want your opinion of what it is claiming.  I mean for most people to think about someone putting their face inside a hat looking at a stone and having God’s word revealed to them is just amazing to me.  So, I just want some LDS comments on this.  Watch with openness of heart and mind.

I’d like to see the physical evidence of Paul’s conversion too. Or maybe a cell phone video of Jesus rising up into the sky.

You are getting into the articles of people’s faith here. There are preposterous claims made by all religions. Sometimes it’s fun to sit around and wonder, condescendingly, “Gee, how did those silly Greeks worship all those Gods?”

What you’re doing here is no different. You are a non-believer as to the LDS faith. So what? What’s the point?

LISTEN, IF YOU DO NOT LIKE TO ANSWER DIRECT QUESTIONS JUST SAY SO…YOU DON’T HAVE TO BOTHER US WITH THE DRIBBLE. THE POINT IS WE LIVE HERE IN THE SAME PLACES AND THE SAME COMMUNITIES. I LIKE TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THE LDS IS ABOUT. I HAVE STUDIED ALOT OF DIFFERENT RELIGIONS AS TO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE ABOUT…NOT WITH THE INTENT OF COVNERTING TO THOSE OTHER RELIGIONS. IT HELPS TO UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MUSLIM AND CHRISTIANITY OR THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MORMONS AND CHRISTIANITY. THE HOSTILITY I HAVE RECEIVED FROM MUCH OF THE LDS IS ASTONISHING TO ME…THE MISSIONARY GUYS THAT COME TO OUR HOUSE ARE NOT LIKE THIS, SO WHY ARE YOU? CAN YOU NOT FOR ONE MOMENT HELP SOMEONE OUTSIDE YOUR FAITH TO KNOW WHAT IT IS YOU BELIEVE AND HELP EXPLAIN STRANGE CUSTOMS OR RITUALS OR EVEN SOME OF THE QUESTIONS REVOLVING AROUND JOSEPH SMITH? JESUS CHRIST WANTS ME TO HELP OTHER UNDERSTAND THE TRUTH ESPECIALLY IF THEY ASK? YOU MENTION PAULS CONVERSION…HSI CONVERSION IS IN THE BIBLE WITH A DIRECT ACCOUNT OF WHAT HAPPENED. JOSEPH SMITH IS NOT IN THE BIBLE WITH A DIRECT ACCOUNT AND HE LIVED CLOSER TO OUR TIMES, SO HE WILL BE IN QUESTION MORE SO THAN OTHERS, BUT I WOULD NOT COMPARE HIM AND HIS SALVATION ACCOUNT TO ANYONE ELSES. WE HAVE THE ACCOUNT OF JESUS RISING INTO THE SKY IN SCRIPTURE, BUT WE DO NOT HAVE ANY GLORIOUS ACCOUNTS LIKE THIS OF JOSEPH SMITH IN SCRIPTURE AND YET HE IS PUT ON THE SAME LEVEL AS CHRIST…IN MY BIBLE THIS IS AN ABOMINATION TO THE LORD…THERE IS NO ONE ON THE SAME LEVEL OR HIGHER THAN GOD THE FATHER, THE SON AND THE HOLY SPIRIT!!!

I HAVE READ EACH OF YOUR LITTLE COMMENTS WITH AMAZEMENT BECAUSE YOU SAID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, BUT YOU COMMENTED ON FOUR DIFFERENT OCCASSIONS…WOW! EACH TIME I WAS LEFT WITH A “HUH?” HOPE YOU HAVE A GREAT LIFE MAN…WOW! SCOTT

I’m not LDS. I’m a skeptic as to ALL religions. There’s nothing tricky or hard to understand about it.

The point is – you’re skeptical about LDS. You are not going to find satisfactory answers to your questions. Just like I’m not going to find satisfactory answers to mine.

A witness to the conversion? That’s it? Not enough to be convincing. A glorious account of Jesus floating up into the air? Sorry, not convincing. People floating and talking lights in the sky? You see, there are plenty of downright odd things in your religion as well. And the only answer ultimately you can give me is “that’s what I believe.”

And it’s ultimately the only answer a believer in any faith can give. There is no other true answer.

You see, the response from me might have been different if you had just come forward in the beginning as a “skeptic”…I thought you were LDS…not much difference in the responses I get.

Faith is believing in that which is not seen or heard. If you can feel it, smell it, touch it, and taste it how can anyone call it faith….does not take much “faith” to believe in that does it? I believe God’s word to be the truth…all accounts in the scriptures I believe, just like LDS members believe in their Joseph Smith and Book of Mormon…how in the world could a person risk their life and name for something they did not believe in or have faith in. It would be worthless. The only way any person can be convinced of the truth that exist in the scriptures is when the Holy Spirit regenerates the heart and opens it up to receive the gospel of truth. Until that happens no person can be convinced or believe…totally impossible. The work of belief rest solely with God Himself.

    Pressing on in Christ,

Mark: Everyone believes in something, I’m quite sure you have your own beliefs about life, so why not share them.
Our ‘religion’ as some call it is ruled by love, love for people and love for God. He came down into history 2000 years ago, He didn’t have to, but He did, because He loved us. He loved you. You have the freedom to believe that or not. The only thing is that your eternal destiny will be set by your accepting or rejecting that truth.
God showed the extent of His love on Calvary, by the excrutiating death and then powerful resurrection on the third day. I have been through the evidence for the resurrection on another blog site…the evidence is there.
No, no camera’s, no satelite, just eye witnesses. And their testimony was written in the Bible for our benefit.
We as I say, are moved by Gods love to tell you that Jesus loves you and wants you to know Him, and that also includes Mormons, J.W’s, Hindu’s, Moslems…anybody we believe needs to hear the truth Jesus came to bring us.
I’v received sarcasm and rudeness from people on the blogs, but it only serves to show me their true character. I hope Christ will be seen, just a little in what I say here.

Here’s how I see what you’re doing: You are attempting to undermine another faith system. And you can’t even let it go. You got to get that last dig in (“Yeah, they believe what they believe just like I believe what I believe. But what I believe is still better than what they believe.”)

What other faith systems should we go after? Which other ones don’t measure up? How should we reeducate people?

Don’t you see the folly of this?

You can have the last word because I don’t want to keep going on like this with you.

I really like your site. Please don’t think I’m around to harass you. I raise objection but I respect your voice and your views. I’m not a name-caller and I do my best to not revert to low blows or brush offs.

But I’m going to keep reading your stuff. You are an excellent writer and a very prepared poster. I may just not comment as much.

    – Mark

Please, come back anytime you like. You are welcome to comment as much as you like…I may just not have time to respond. However, other readers may respond. I appreciate the honesty and being civil on the post….it becomes a bore whenever people get uncivil…thanks for reading. You are welcome here anytime.

Mark: The Truth is out there…..somewhere. This is a statement from a well known tv programme, but, you see, the truth is out there…wouldn’t you want to know it? I certainly did when I was in my twenties.
I felt I had found it in Jesus Christ, and over 35 years later He is as much truth in my life as He ever has been. So, my love for truth, and for Jesus urges me to reach others with this truth. When there are others who feel they already have a truth they sometimes feel we are encroaching on their freedom to believe or that we are somehow wanting to destroy what they have. This is far from the truth…..we do not want people to be destroyed by the deception that is also out there.
Jesus loved people and wanted them to know Him but they didn’t like His kind of ‘religion’ and they crucified Him for it.
Today we face the same animosity, but we go on loving people and trying to reach them with the Truth that we believe is THE TRUTH.
Mark, God loves you, Jesus loves you , and as a Christian with Gods love inside me, I love you.
    So thats the bottom line.
