We are to be a stranger in this world!

Posted by Scott on September 15, 2008

1 Peter 1:13-16

“Therefore, prepare your minds for actions, be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed.  As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.  But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, for it is written, “Be holy, because I am holy.””

We are to be different from the world in how we conduct our lives.  We are not to sound like the world, look like the world or be like the world.  Yes, we have to live in the world, but we are not to conform to it.

You might ask how one conforms to this world?  Several ways that are choices for each of us and are issues I have to battle myself daily.  The television shows we watch, the movies we go see, the places we go that are not honoring to God and so on.  So called “Christians” divorce rate is now higher than the secular society.  Many of the churches are designing their churches to look like a honky tonk bar scene in order to look more like the world with the goal of attracting more people.  So, as individuals or corperately we are looking more and more like the world and further away from being a holy person of God.

What is one to do?  Well, if living a holy life we will be looked upon as strange, alien, crazy, and insain.  We will be accused of being fanatics for God.  People will wonder about us and why we do certain things.  This life style is designed to attract questions about what we know and why we do certain things by the world.  Our witness should be for Christ and the life He designed for us from the beginning.  This does not include just lip service to Christ.  So, lets be different living as aliens in a foreign land in action not just words.

but we are called only to be imitators of Christ and not of the world

Yes, imitators is another facet of this verse. Christ was like nothing the world had ever seen before. His life was an attraction to His sheep…His people wanted to be close to Him because He was different. Today, we are to be the image of Christ attracting His sheep, His chosen ones into the family. The churches need to do the exact opposite as most are doing right now by moving more in the direction of Christ likeness as opposed to more world likeness. God’s people are attracted to the life of an authentic Christian not a group authentic heretics.

    Keep blogging Britt.

    Pressing on in Christ,
